To lose belly fat, especially without exercise, you need to understand why exercise is not going to be enough to stimulate fat loss. Take a look at popular exercises that are used to burn fat; walking, jogging, sprinting, and even burpees. Walking and jogging provide minimal caloric burn which is not enough to put you in a caloric deficit. Sprinting and burpees, while providing a greater caloric expenditure, cannot be sustained long enough to really make a difference.

If you walk for an hour, you are likely to burn 264 calories. This can be completely undone by eating a snickers at 215 calories. Think you might opt for a healthier snack like a yogurt? Well, that can just as much damage at 240 calories. This brings up the point that you need to make smarter choices when you choose what to eat.

A big problem that people have when it comes to getting rid of belly fat is that they believe because they exercised in some way, they can reward themselves with a “cheat meal”. This way of thinking is what causes a lack of progress when it comes to losing any kind of fat. Replacing the calories burnt with this “reward” simply means that all the work that they did to burn calories has been for naught. Worse still, if choosing a calorically dense meal, they can actually cause more damage by eating more calories than were burned in the first place.

Some might think certain foods are โ€œhealthyโ€ or โ€œcleanโ€ but donโ€™t realize the amount of calories that their meals are packing. Remember, to burn belly fat, you need to be in a caloric deficit and making the wrong choices in what you put into your body can compromise that. Many meals you find at restaurants, while looking healthy, actually contain over 1,000 calories per meal.

A good place to start is to educate yourself on foods that are less calorically dense. What you can do with this information is make meal swaps. Belly fat loss requires that you choose the right foods to replace what you are eating right now. A few examples include changing chicken parmesan to citrus grilled chicken. The fried breading and cheese are packed with calories that can easily kill any deficit that you thought might have been in. This plate averages 800-1100 calories whereas that grilled chicken meal checks in at 400-700 calories. Thatโ€™s a huge difference and can be the difference between gaining and losing belly fat.

Another example on food swaps that you can easily make includes changing white rice out for cauliflower rice. A standard serving of white rice contains around 240 calories while the same amount of cauliflower rice checks in at 20 calories. That’s a lot of calories you could be saving just by making a single, easy swap. Burning fat, again, comes down to making smarter choices in the food that you put in your mouth.

There are some easy swaps to make that you have likely tried before such as swapping out soft drinks and soda for sparkling water (something that contains zero calories in each can or bottle). The swaps don’t always have to be drastic or difficult, but again, require a bit of knowledge and education.

The next step you can take to burn lower belly fat is to limit the portion sizes of your meals. If you are making healthier choices but eating too much of said meals, you are not achieving the caloric deficit required to burn fat. Some of the meals I show you look very similar, but changing the portion sizes of some of the ingredients can make a huge impact on how many calories you consume. Limiting those portions will have you on your way to burning that stubborn belly fat.

Now, while being in caloric deficit is the key to losing belly fat, it doesn’t stop there; this is where exercise becomes important. To avoid being “skinny fat” you will need to build muscle too. Doing this will give a more appealing aesthetic as well as increasing your resting metabolism – allowing for a more forgiving caloric goal and diet.

Two recommendations I have to make this all stick for good is to avoid time aversion eating. If you have heard that eating after 6 PM is going to make you fat, you’ve been lied to. This is nothing more than a myth and if restricting yourself to a time is making it harder for you to stick to a solid meal plan, then you need to throw this notion out the window. My next recommendation is to increase your protein intake, because as you build muscle, more protein is required and is more satiating than carbs and fats but less calorically dense, which will help you keep you on track to lose belly fat.

It can seem as though no matter what exercises you try to lose belly fat and no matter how well you eat, the belly fat just wonโ€™t budge. And unfortunately, with exception to surgery, there is currently no proven method of being able to spot reduce fat from the belly. There is an exercise, however, that is incredibly underutilized yet powerfully effective when it comes to losing even the most stubborn belly fat. Today Iโ€™ll share what that is and how you can start using it right away to lose belly fat.

Why is belly fat is so hard to lose in the first place? Well, it comes down to the fact that certain areas of your body are easier to lose fat than others, and is largely determined by genetics. Now having your genetics stacked against you may seem problematic if youโ€™re looking to develop a slim or lean looking abdomen, but there is a solution. As long as you create a calorie deficit, you will continue to lose fat. Eventually, if maintained long enough, you will lose excess fat from all areas of your body, even if your genetics put your belly fat at the back of the line.

While diet should be your main way of creating a calorie deficit, adding additional exercises could help you to lose belly fat by keeping your metabolism high, even as youโ€™re losing weight from dieting. That said, not all exercises are created equal. While things like running, rowing, cycling, or even HIIT workouts tend to burn calories very quickly, the truth is, the overwhelming majority of people canโ€™t actually stick with traditional cardio long enough for fat loss to reach stubborn areas. And itโ€™s not that these methods donโ€™t work if you stick to it, because they do. The problem is simply that theyโ€™re brutal. They require a lot of willpower.

Now donโ€™t get me wrong, these forms of cardio definitely do have their place and some people have no problem sticking to them. In fact, I still do these intense sessions once or twice a week for conditioning. But I no longer rely on them as my main form of cardio to lose fat and nor should most people. Because if you want to lose your stubborn belly fat, and more importantly keep it off once itโ€™s gone, then you need something you can stick to for life. Whatโ€™s the solution?

The best exercise to lose belly fat is walking. Itโ€™s the easiest to maintain, lowest stress, lowest fatigue, and most versatile form of cardio. According to research, intense forms of cardio like HIIT or running, while time efficient, didnโ€™t provide any superior fat loss effect when compared to longer yet less intense forms of cardio such as walking. Which makes sense. Itโ€™s simply a numbers game. Your body doesnโ€™t care whether the calories you burned were from some crazy intense fasted cardio session or from plain old walking. What matters most is what you can do consistently over time. And if you crunch the numbers, youโ€™ll actually find that the calories burned from simply walking can very quickly add up to a meaningful amount.

So now that Iโ€™ve hopefully convinced you of the power of walking, letโ€™s dive into the specifics of how to lose belly fat from walking. The first step is to determine an average of how many steps youโ€™re currently taking. You can use the health app on your iPhone or use Google Fit if youโ€™re on Android. After a week, see what your daily average comes up to. Some of you however might be surprised with how few steps youโ€™re taking, but this is a good thing, as it means you have a big opportunity to bump that up.

Set a realistic goal and first aim to do an extra 2,000 steps a day. Given that the average individual takes about 1,200 steps during 10 minutes of walking, all you have to do is throw in two 10 minutes walks into your day to accomplish that. Once youโ€™re consistent with that, try bumping it up by another 2,000 steps, and continue doing this with the goal of consistently getting at least 8,000 steps or even up to 15,000 steps, which seems to be the range that provides the greatest fat loss and health benefits.

Trust me, the little things add up. Apply these tips and youโ€™ll be surprised with just how much they increase your step count and even more surprised by how much of a difference it makes towards your fat loss overtime. That said guys, I want to emphasize that walking or any form of cardio is only effective for fat loss if itโ€™s used in combination with a diet. So use your diet as the primary way to create a calorie deficit and supplement it with walking to help speed up the process.
