How to lose belly fat is a question that I get more common than any other question. This is for a good reason. Fat loss often starts and stops with our abs, our core, our lower belly and once that is lean we know we have reached our goal. This can also be the toughest part of fat loss. Todays question is around the idea that cardio is a waste of time for fat loss.
We must understand two things when it comes to losing body fat. First we must understand how fat is lost and we must also understand how long it will take. For many the frustration sets in once we have lost some weight but see no change in the belly fat or lower abdomen.
The #1 Exercise to lose belly fat (for good) is not a setup, a leg raise or any muscle building movement. Losing belly fat requires an exercise that we can perform with consistency, which allows us to recover, does not cause us to over eat and keeps fat loss moving.
How much cardio should we be doing to lose belly fat, that is not the right question.
What is the perfect diet for losing belly fat, there is no perfect diet for everyone.
Let me explain the best way to lose belly fat and that cardio can be a waste of time if you are doing it wrong! Video Rating: / 5
Its time to get in fat burning mode with this quick and effective Tabata workout.

Wondering how much cardio is needed to burn belly fat? Well, youβre in the right place. Weβre going to talk all about cardio, and more specifically how you can use it to get rid of belly fat. The truth is, most people seeking burn belly fat approach their cardio routines the wrong way and fail to account for the various metabolic adaptations we experience. The good news though is by Implementing the right cardio plan, you will be able to break through any plateaus you encounter to the point where youβre able to lose belly fat. Before that, letβs first take a look at the problems we face when it comes to cardio and belly fat loss.
One of the major limitations with cardio for fat loss is that as we lose weight and improve our fitness levels, our body compensates by trying to burn less calories throughout the day. Thatβs obviously bad news if you want to burn belly fat. And is also why your cardio plan needs to be designed and actually progressed overtime such that it accounts for this. But, at the same time, you donβt want to do too much too soon.
So, how exactly do we account for those factors? Well, we can do so with a 4-step plan that when combined with a calorie deficit from your diet, will help you lean down and eventually get rid of belly fat. The first thing we need to do here is establish a small amount of cardio to get you in the habit of moving and adhering to a cardio plan that we can then progress. What Iβd recommend is just 10 minutes of incline walking every single day. You can swap this for light cycling or any low intensity, low impact cardio modality.
In step 2, we want to then very gradually start increasing the duration and/or difficulty of our cardio sessions. But again, the key here though is that youβre simply increasing your cardio very gradually overtime to enable you to break through any plateaus you encounter so you lose belly fat successfully. That said, the extent to which you do so though will vary individually and depend on your lifestyle.
As you apply the above 3 steps, you need to ensure that youβre not then compensating outside of these cardio sessions. So, to avoid this possible compensation from impeding your belly fat loss, you need to control and monitor 3 variables. First, your step count. Second, you need to be adhering to a regular weightlifting routine. And lastly, you need to monitor and control your calorie intake and ensure that youβre still adhering to a calorie deficit.
Now the last step here has to do with maintaining your new physique. Find a routine or hobby that you can now stick to that’ll enable you to maintain your new bodyweight and physique with ease.
Hereβs a summary of what Iβve covered on how much cardio is needed to burn belly fat:
Step 1 (Baseline): Start at a low baseline level of cardio.
Step 2 (Increase): In gradual increments, increase the duration/difficulty of your weekly cardio sessions every time you reach a plateau.
Step 3 (Control): Control all other variables and keep them consistent (weights routine, daily steps, calorie intake) to avoid compensating for your cardio sessions.
Step 4 (Maintain): After youβve successfully stripped off the belly fat, find a routine thatβll enable you to maintain your new bodyweight and physique.
Just keep in mind that you need to be pairing your cardio routine with a regular weightlifting routine and a solid nutrition plan, as these will both help speed up the process and ensure that you donβt just end up βskinny fatβ by the end of your fat loss journey. And for a step by step plan that shows you exactly how to do this by optimizing your workouts, nutrition, and cardio plan for you such that you can lean down as efficiently as possible with science, just like countless of our members have done with their Built With Science programs, then simply take the analysis quiz below to discover which specific program is best for your body and where itβs currently at:

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: Some people may see my video titles as click-bait. YouTubers optimise their video’s meta data for discovery due to how the algorithm is like. This isn’t anything new. Most people who’ve been watching YouTube for years would understand this. If you’re unhappy and get triggered by this, well, this channel isn’t for you then. Iβve provided free workout schedules and programs since day 1 and have always optimised my meta data as such so that’s not going to change.
Having said that, it doesn’t mean the workout do not work. You will still see results by following a suitable program schedule, watching your diet, being in a deficit or surplus (based on your goals), doing exercises in good form, etc. These are all equally important factors. You’re not going to get abs, grow a booty, grow biceps magically from 1 or 2 videos, in 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks cause everyone is different. I’ve explain multiple times throughout videos throughout my channel over years that it takes time and lots of factors, so don’t take a video title out of context. Targetting fat loss is not scientifically proven. Everyone is different and it takes time.
When doing any home workouts, do take precaution to exercise in a safe environment, and if you need help or you’re not seeing results, I suggest seeing a health and fitness professional to give you tailored advice on your exercise form and dietary needs. I am not a medical professional and what I share on my channel are my views and what has worked for myself. Your health and safety is the utmost importance so find out what works for you. If you’re trying to burn fat why not do it in a way that has you working smarter rather than harder. Most people automatically assume that cardio is better for fat loss and weights are better for building muscle. And this may be true if you compare traditional steady-state cardio to traditional weight training but there are different forms of weight training that incorporate very effective new training techniques that may be far more beneficial for fat loss. So If youre the type of person that wouldnt mind burning fat faster with less effort then stick with me through this video because I’m going to give you a couple surprising new ways that you could lose fat way faster with both cardio and weight training models and ill make sure that you fully understand which one is best for you and your goals. Now if you’re looking for the quick overnight fix I don’t have that for you but this is as close as you’re going to get to that magic bullet quick fix to spending less time in the gym while burning more fat from your workouts. So let’s start first by taking a closer look at Cardio and weight training at their core. Traditional cardio is usually performed on a treadmill an elliptical stair climber a bike or even on a rowing machine. When I talk about traditional cardio I’m mostly referring to steady-state long duration cardio where you’re continuously repeating the same low to moderate intensity motions like jogging, biking, or swimming for an extended period of time. Most of traditional types of cardio are forms of aerobic training. Aerobic training primarily involves using oxygen to sufficiently meet the body’s energy demands during exercise. On the other hand traditional weight training where you lift a heavy weight load for a certain amount of reps before taking a break and then repeating for more sets, THAT is considered anaerobic training. With anaerobic training oxygen alone cannot supply enough energy to meet the demands placed on the body so glycogen from the muscles is primarily used to fuel the activity. Generally speaking, youβll burn more calories for each session of cardio than weight training for about the same amount of effort. Minute per minute, cardio burns more calories. But does that mean that cardio is better for fat loss? Let’s take a closer look. For a long time it was believed that to burn the maximum amount of fat you had to stay in what was known as the fat burning zone which mostly could only be maintained through aerobic cardiovascular activity. The idea behind the fat burning zone was that you would burn a higher percentage of fat calories rather than carb calories when you stayed at about 70 percent of your maximum heart rate. And this made sense to most people because once an activity became too intense the pathway for energy would change to anaerobic and begin primarily burning glycogen or carbs for fuel rather than using fat oxidation. However, it’s been proven that the fat burning zone is a myth because both types of training aerobic and anaerobic can burn plenty of fat. And if you burn more overall calories from a higher intensity workout like the ones I’m about to share with you, so anything above roughly 70{207ec0e55ac2d8ff09d5a0c2aab9d2ad76a7d888f1e59bae109fcfedbf7c5271} of your maximum heart rate you might be burning a higher percentage of carbs, but you’re also burning more overall calories because you’re heart rate is higher and the activity is more intense. So even if you have a smaller percentage of fat coming from a larger overall number of calories, you can still wind up burning more fat. This is easy to understand if I give you an example like take 50 percent of a smaller number like 500, and then take 30 percent of a larger number like 1,000. Just because you’re burning a higher percentage of fat from lower intensity exercise like steady state cardio, doesn’t mean that you’re burning more fat. On top of that even though we know cardio will typically burn more calories per session than weight training, research has shown that
